Abstract

The digitalization of shipping, stricter safety requirements and a shortage of qualified seafarers are radically changing the requirements for corporate training in shipping companies. Along with the traditional STCW training block, digital learning platforms, integrated competence management systems, partnership models with meta-institutes and international projects (SkillSea, WMU, etc.) are being formed. The purpose of the article is to develop a typology of corporate training systems for employees of the shipping industry based on the analysis of current research on seafarers' competencies, the impact of Industry 4.0 on labor and training, as well as corporate training practices in shipping companies. It is proved that at least five types of systems coexist in the industry: regulatory-compliance, operational-technical (safety and efficiency), digital platforms for lifelong learning, career-oriented (talent-management) and network/ecosystem models based on partnerships and international projects. The proposed typology allows us to move from the description of individual programs to the analysis of integrated corporate training systems as a component of strategic human resource management in the shipping industry.
